Description: DBIA-WPR and AIA San Francisco Joint presentation series.

Join AIA San Francisco and DBIA for a 3-part design build series, which will bring together some of the top names in architecture, engineering, and construction in the Bay Area. Attendees can choose to attend a single program or get a discount when they sign up for the whole series.

James R. Kachik, Architect 
Deputy Director | General Services Agency/Technical Services Department, County of Alameda

James Kachik leads the award-winning Technical Services Department (TSD) of the County of Alameda General Services Agency (GSA) and its staff of 45. Licensed in California in 1974, he has been with the County since 1997, and is responsible for Capital Projects, Energy, Sustainability, Environmental and Property Salvage programs. Kachik held various positions in private sector Architectural firms for 23 years before joining the County.

Katie Twomey 
Vice President | Clark Construction Group LLC

Katie Twomey joined Clark Construction in 1989 in New York City on the Three Lincoln Center & Julliard School project. After stints in Maryland, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Southern California, Katie became engrained in Clark's Northern California office in 2008. Katie's career has been focused on delivering healthcare, convention centers, office buildings and education facilities. She has served as Officer-in-Charge on two DBIA Award-Winning projects. As a Vice President of Healthcare for Clark, Katie has also provided oversight for design-build projects for Dignity Health campuses and currently on the Highland Hospital Acute Care Tower Replacement.

Carl Christiansen 
Vice President | SmithGroupJJR

Carl Christiansen has lead SmithGroupJJR’s San Francisco Healthcare Architecture Studio and continues to lead large healthcare projects in the studio. Carl has led and managed dozens of large-scale, technically complex national and international healthcare projects. His deep experience, knowledge, and leadership are instrumental in the success of the firm’s projects. Whether it’s traditional delivery, design-build, or integrated project delivery, Carl has been at the center of the firm’s success with alternative delivery methods. He is working with Jim and Katie on the Alameda County Acute Tower Replacement Project.

Scott Bergstrom, LEED AP 
Project Executive, Healthcare Practice Leader | Blach Construction

Scott is responsible for the business development, project execution, financial performance, and client relationships for all healthcare projects Blach Construction is involved in. Scott served as the Project Executive for the San Jose State Student Health Center. His 25 years of construction experience encompasses a wide variety of project types, and he has spent the last 10 years focusing on healthcare and healthcare related projects.

Gary Jereczek, AIA 
Associate Principal | Ratcliff

Ratcliff is a 109-year-old, 60-person, award-winning firm located in Emeryville, CA, which specializes in healthcare, academic/higher education and K – 12 school projects. Gary served as Project Manager and Planner for the San Jose State Student Health and Wellness Center. With over 30 years of experience, Gary has focused on the successful delivery of a number of Ambulatory Care Centers. Current healthcare clients include Santa Clara County, Stanford Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health.

Samuel Huckaby 
Associate Director of Construction Management in Facilities, Development and Operations | San Jose State University

Samuel is responsible for more than $230MM in major capital projects on campus. He received a masters degree in Construction Management from CSU East Bay and bachelors in Concrete Industry Management from Middle Tennessee State University. He currently instructs courses part time in the CM program at CSUEB. Sam received DBIA Professional certification in 2014, and he is a big proponent of Design Build projects. Before Sam worked at SJSU, he spent nine years working for various private construction companies.

Moderator

Andy Kirby, DBIA, is Vice President for C.W. Driver for the Northern California Region. He is responsible for overseeing all of C.W. Driver’s operations in the region. He received a master’s degree in Construction Management and bachelors in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy. He is overseeing $300M in backlog and active construction projects in the Bay Area. Andy is a board member of the Bay Area DBIA chapter and is actively involved.
